Adorno's critique of mass culture is trenchant but not snobbish or elitistic.
He point out that the masses are the objects of the industry, not the
determining subjects, the culture industry integrates its consumer from above.
The culture industry packages culture into entertainment, through patterns of
standardization and, with advertising and marketing, distributes like any other
manufactured goods. I'm especially impressed by his analysis of the difference
of the techniques of arts and those of cultural products, arts celebrate
counter-consciousness: negation of the prevalent realistic conformism. Here are
the two most important articles of Adorno about the culture industry:
"The
Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception" by Theodor Adorno and
Max Horkheimer
"Culture
Industry Reconsidered" by Theodor Adorno
